Seabin

Fun Fact: Did you know that people “Down Under” flip the world map by 180° to use it the other way around? No? Unfortunately, this change of perspective does nothing to improve global environmental problems, including the pollution of the world’s oceans. Being confronted by this issue on a daily basis was reason enough for our colleagues from uvex safety Australia and New Zealand (uvex ANZ) to look for effective solutions. And on a continent surrounded by ocean, what could be more obvious than starting right on your own doorstep? With the sustainable start-up “Seabin”, uvex ANZ stumbled upon the right partner straight away, meaning that it now specifically supports seawater clean-up operations by removing plastic waste, oils and other pollutants found in port facilities, yacht clubs, harbours, marinas and all other bodies of water with a calm environment.

How does the Seabin work?

The device works simply like a floating dustbin, skimming the surface of the water by pumping water into the device. The latest version, the Seabin V5, can capture floating debris, macro and micro plastics and even microfibers with an additional filter. In addition, the Seabin V5 is able to purify the water by removing contaminated organic material (leaves, algae, etc.). Furthermore, the Seabin V5 I can easily be fitted with oil-absorbing pads that are able to absorb surface oils and petroleum-based cleaning agents. It can be directly connected to a 110V or 220V socket for charging.

The Seabin can remove around 3.9 kg of floating rubbish per day, which is equivalent to 1.4 tons per year (depending on weather conditions and volume of rubbish), including microplastics up to a size of 2 mm.

Story behind Seabin

How does uvex ANZ support the Seabin project?

uvex ANZ has not only kitted out 12 Seabin team members from head to toe, but also has its own uvex Seabin. The Seabin proudly displaying the uvex logo is used in Darling Harbour, Sydney. In addition, uvex ANZ has been a partner of the Seabin 100 Cities programme since 2021. The programme aims to deploy the Seabin in 100 cities around the world by 2050, which facilitates a massive volume of data to be collected on a continuous basis. This fosters detailed understanding as well as management of plastic flows in the global oceans. In addition, the uvex group is featured in two social media posts each month and a video about the partnership between uvex and Seabin is being planned.
